The mud brick and stone architecture of Oman’s many forts provide a constant reminder of the country’s past. Whether you travel the interiors, the coast, or the mountains you are sure to come across the remains of a fort, each with its own story to tell Oman’s defensive history. While forts were built primarily as structures of military defense, they also served as points of convergence for political, social and community activity. Therefore some forts have palatial, luxurious interiors hidden behind their stark exteriors. There are around 500 forts in Oman, many of them restored.
