Mountain Adventure

Also known as the camel’s hideout; The Jebel Al Akhdar meaning (The Green Mountain) A part of the country where there’s abundant spring water and temperatures are several degrees cooler the rest of Oman. Gardens and orchards spill over with such abundance that farmers sometimes have trouble harvesting the fruit of their labour. And what fruits they are: Peaches, Pears, Oranges, Lemons are just a few cultivated on the “Green Mountain”.

In winter the temperature can drop to -5 degrees and hail stones are not uncommon. The best time to visit is in April, when the roses are in bloom and many of the trees are full of fruit.

Jabal Shams /Grand Canyon of Oman/ is 3,000 meters (around 9,800 feet) high and called the (Mountain of the Sun), isn’t so named for nothing: as the road bends and loops endlessly towards the summit, the Jabal Shams seems to lose all touch with the terrestrial. The most spectacular part of Jabal Shams is not the mountain, but the view back down again. Indeed, the shepherd weavers of the surrounding mountain hamlets are an integral part of Jabal Shams. Rug weaving has been handed down from Father’s to Son’s for generations.
